Plenty of F 850 GSs are ridden by people who do not own them. Rental fleets and guided-tour operators are steady customers for this class, and a machine used that way keeps a different sort of time: engine hours rather than an owner's mileage, a new rider every few days, a fortnight of dry gravel and then a pressure wash. Whoever specifies the intake on a bike like that buys for the hardest week of its year, not the average one — the setting in which the finest medium in the catalogue stops looking exotic.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven in polyester, rated at 7 microns of filtration
- Flow rated at 560 l/m²/sec, the figure that comes with a medium this fine
- No oil in it new and none applied after washing — nothing to migrate downstream
- Direct exchange for the factory element inside the unaltered airbox, no remapping
- Close to twice the working surface of other performance filters
- Designed to last the life of the motorcycle, with a two-year guarantee from purchase
A part with a state you can return to
Paper only travels one way. It loads, its resistance climbs, and the only remedy is a new one — which is why a fleet bike's intake history is written by whoever last signed the service sheet. A washable element behaves differently: after air and, when needed, water, it comes back to a condition close to the one it started in, over and over. That gives a machine passed between riders something rare, a baseline that can be restored rather than guessed at. It also suits the rhythm of hire work, where the airbox is opened on a schedule anyway and a fine medium can be looked after properly.
The flow it gives back
None of that is free, and the size of the bill deserves stating plainly. Where the standard P08 filters at 80 microns and carries a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, this non-woven filters at 7 microns and carries 560: roughly a ninth of the air through an equal area of material. Retention and flow move against each other — a finer medium is stricter, never simply better — so this is a choice about the air the bike breathes, not a rank in a league table. It also adds no noticeable power to a standard 850, and any description suggesting otherwise is selling something a filter cannot do.
Care and cleaning
The routine takes minutes and needs no consumables. Air is applied to the clean face of the PM188T12 and worked outward until the mat gives up its load; if the trip was hard enough that air alone leaves it grey, warm water and a mild detergent will take the rest, followed by a rinse until nothing more comes out. From there it dries in open air and only in open air — heat guns, ovens and flames all destroy the medium — and goes back in fully dry. The maintenance sheet is stored in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW F 850 GS built between 2017 and 2026, replacing the original element in the standard airbox. Eleven machines take this part number across three makes — the BMW middleweight F models, the Kove 800 X and Voge's Valico adventure range. See the Fitment tab for the complete list.
