Roadsters reach their second owner sooner than superbikes do, and a second owner inherits an intake whose history nobody can produce. The airbox is not opened at a viewing, the service record rarely says which panel went in or when, and a paper element gives no reading: it has been growing more restrictive since the day it was fitted and says nothing about how far that has gone. A dry, washable element ends the guesswork. It comes out, it is blown through, and it goes back at a defined starting condition.
Key Features
- One dry layer of woven polyester, untreated from new and untreated after every clean
- 85 µm between the threads at a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec, the top of the flow range
- Quoted retention of 95.22 per cent against 100-micron test particles
- Close to twice the filtering area of a typical performance panel
- Direct replacement for the series element: no airbox work, no change to the fuelling
- Regenerated rather than renewed, built to last the motorcycle out, guaranteed two years
An intake with no paperwork
Of everything a used machine carries forward, the induction side is the least documented. Tyres, pads and fluids announce themselves; the panel behind the tank does not, and the only way to know its condition is to hold it up. A cloth element settles that item for the rest of the machine's life: cleaned instead of purchased, it stays with the motorcycle through this ownership and the next. That is a housekeeping gain, not a performance one — no insert element makes an unmodified motorcycle noticeably stronger.
Whether this is the right cloth for it
Put the two options for this airbox side by side. The standard P08 gives 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec; this racing weave gives 85 µm and 15,000, at a shade under two and a half times the outlay. Both are dry, washed and reused, both drop in unmodified — the difference is a flow rate redeemed only with the throttle pinned high in the range for seconds on end. On a naked roadster used on public roads that state barely exists. For road use the standard weave is the honest answer; the racing one earns its keep when circuit days are genuinely part of the plan.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the routine work on the PM171S F1-85: apply it to the clean face and work outwards, so everything the weave has caught leaves in the direction it arrived from. A wash is for the times air is no longer enough — lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsing until it runs clear. After that the element dries right through in moving air, well away from any heater and any flame, and is refitted dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW S 1000 R built from 2021 to 2026, dropping straight into the standard airbox. This generation of the roadster keeps one part number for its entire run, which makes it the simplest name here to order for; others are not, as the S 1000 RR, the S 1000 XR and the M 1000 RR each hand part of their model years to a different element. Five machines share this filter, and the Fitment tab gives the years for each.
