DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60293-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60293-31

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

Free length 190 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 95 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
