DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05673-19 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 300 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 67 mm
  • 158 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 05673-19
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

The 67 mm bore and 300 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 70 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Fitting

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
