DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05673-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 65 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 300 mm
  • Öhlins part number 05673-17
  • 160 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 67 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 65 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

The Numbers That Matter

The 67 mm bore and 300 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 65 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 65 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

Fitting

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
