DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01093-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 01093-14
- 82 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 150 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 150 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 60 N/mm
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
What Fitting Involves
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
