DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 48 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 128 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 48 N/mm
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00698-08
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

What Fitting Involves

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
