DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 60280-20 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Free length 200 mm
- Öhlins part number 60280-20
- Measured spring rate 20 N/mm
- Inner diameter 46 mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
Dimensions
Free length 200 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 20 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
What This Rate Does
Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
What Fitting Involves
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
