DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21140-79 is a shock absorber spring rated at 190 N/mm, 100 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 190 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 21140-79
  • 44 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 100 mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 100 mm, inner diameter 51 mm, rate 190 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
