DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01095-74 is a shock absorber spring rated at 180 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 180 N/mm
  • 73 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 01095-74

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 180 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 180 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
