DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 230 mm
- 104 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 110 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 00698-39
Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
What Fitting Involves
Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
