A Designation Older Than the Bike
BMW first used RS on the R100RS in 1976, a motorcycle with a full fairing developed in a wind tunnel at a time when almost nothing else had one. The letters have meant fast and faired ever since. On the 2014 R1200RS they name a machine with a rather different mission from the original but a recognisably similar idea.
Cut Into the Metal
The lettering is machined into the aluminium rather than printed on it, which is why it is the same colour as the housing and why it will still be legible in ten years. Anodising goes on after the milling, so the letters and the body share one finish and age together.
Half a Fairing, Whole Days
The RS is bought for long, fast rides on interesting roads rather than for motorway distance or for track work. That use pattern puts sustained rather than extreme demand on the controls: hours of throttle, regular mode changes, cruise control on the transit sections. It is the wear pattern that dulls a moulded switch quietly.
One Component, Two Jobs
The right-hand switches are integrated into the throttle housing on this generation of boxer, so both are renewed together. This unit is a single machined body covering both, using the motorcycle's own connector, with nothing rewired and nothing to code afterwards.
Two Generations, Two Housings
This part covers the 1170 cc RS to 2018. The ShiftCam 1250 that followed has its own listing. The motorcycles look similar and are not electrically interchangeable, so the year matters more than the appearance.
Machined Edges Under a Glove
What separates a milled control from a moulded one in use is the step around each button. It gives a gloved thumb a physical boundary rather than a printed one, which is the difference on a bike ridden through spring and autumn weather.
