DescriptionThe whole story▼
Six model names on one part number, and one of them has three wheels. Yamaha's 847 cc triple went into the MT-09, the Tracer 900, the XSR900 and the leaning three-wheeled Niken, and all of them share the same catalytic converter.
Key Features
- Covers six Yamaha model names, including the three-wheeled Niken
- Needed by the Racing Line S-Y9R8-HEGEHT to keep its EC approval
- Honeycomb metal carrier with a precious metal coating
- Eight model years under one number
- Akrapovic records an EC approval against it
The Widest Fitment of Any Converter Here
MT-09, FZ-09, Tracer 900, FJ-09, XSR900, Niken. Yamaha built all of them around the CP3 triple with the same exhaust layout, and one converter serves the lot from 2014 to 2021.
The Niken is the outlier and it is worth naming: a leaning three-wheeler with two front wheels, mechanically the same motorcycle from the engine backwards. Owners of one are used to being told a part does not fit theirs. This one does.
What the Racing Line Needs
Akrapovic's Racing Line for the MT-09 family is EC and ECE type approved, and that approval is written around a converter being present. Take it out and the exhaust becomes a track part.
Anyone fitting the Racing Line to a road bike needs this number in the same order.
Or the Original Has Died
The other reason people search for a converter. On an MT-09 from 2014 the original is now over a decade old, and a converter is a consumable: heat cycles crack the substrate, and a spell of running rich coats it in a way that cannot be undone.
Symptoms are a dead spot at high revs, a rattle under the bike, or a failed emissions test. None of them can be confirmed by eye.
Precious Metals on a Honeycomb
The carrier is a metal honeycomb; the working part is a coating of palladium, rhodium and platinum bonded to it. Carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons go in, carbon dioxide and water vapour come out.
Those three metals are most of the price, and they are also the reason a used unit is a gamble — the coating is invisible and a poisoned converter looks perfect.
Built Around the Flow
Akrapovic makes the point that its converters are performance oriented rather than generic. A restriction is unavoidable; the design goal is to keep it small enough that the system's sound and figures survive.
The Triple That Defined a Decade
The CP3 engine gave Yamaha a middleweight platform that ran from 2014 through several generations. It is one of the most common used motorcycles in Germany, and the parts supply around it matters more than for most machines.
Not an Exhaust
One converter in the box. No muffler, no headers, no link pipe.
Road Approval
An EC approval is recorded against this converter. It is what keeps the Racing Line legal on a public road.
