DescriptionThe whole story▼
Cross-country races rarely give you a clear view. On dry days the rider ahead lifts a cloud of dust that hangs between the trees, and on a Yamaha YZ250X you can spend long minutes braking for corners you only half see. The YZ250X is the cross-country version of Yamaha's 250 two-stroke, with wider-spaced gear ratios and a side stand, and it is made for exactly this sort of racing. Accossato supplies the B8265 for it: a folding front brake lever for the 2016 to 2022 models, machined on CNC equipment from solid Ergal 7075.
Key Features
- Front brake lever with folding blade for the Yamaha YZ250X, 2016 to 2022
- Takes the place of the stock lever on the original master cylinder
- Blade may fold forward on its anti-break joint instead of snapping
- Kept short for three fingers
- Cut from solid Ergal 7075 on CNC machines in Italy
- Dark base, blade in black, blue or green
- No documented German ABE; intended for off-road competition
Construction and Material Quality
Two pieces of Ergal 7075 make up the B8265, each cut from solid material by CNC machines in Italy. Accossato favours this aluminium alloy for its high strength, and its declared aim is a lever that stays strong and reliable while adding as little weight as possible. The base, finished dark, fits the pivot of the original master cylinder and houses the joint. The blade is available in black, blue or green, the blue being an easy match for Yamaha's plastics if you like, and it has the short brake-side shape that Accossato draws for three fingers.
Riding in Someone Else's Dust
Following closely in dust is one of the odder skills of cross-country racing. You cannot see the ruts, the rocks or the exact entry of the next turn, only the outline of the rider in front and the trees on either side. Experienced racers deal with it by learning reference points on the opening lap, a stump here, a course arrow there, and braking from memory once visibility drops. Others drop back a few lengths or move slightly off the dusty line in search of clearer air. On a YZ250X, which changes direction readily, that kind of line change is easy to make.
The danger is a surprise at the last moment: a hole hidden in the haze, braking bumps that were not there a lap earlier, a rider who has stopped in the middle of the trail. Brake too hard, too late, and the front tyre gives up. When the YZ250X goes down on its right, the brake lever takes the hit, and the B8265's joint lets the blade move forward instead of meeting the ground rigidly. That raises the odds of rejoining with a usable front brake without making it certain. After a fall in the dust, make sure the blade sits in its normal position before setting off, because the next corner will be just as hard to see.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's application list names the YZ250X twice for this lever, once for 2016 to 2021 and once for 2016 to 2022, so every model year from 2016 to 2022 is covered. The B8265 fits the Yamaha YZ250X's original front brake master cylinder. On the clutch side the folding C7266 is listed for the same years; it comes in black or blue, and green is found only on this brake lever.
Road Approval
Accossato's paperwork for the B8265 includes no German ABE, so the lever belongs to cross-country racing and closed off-road terrain rather than public roads.
