Two words on this page point in opposite directions, and neither of them was measured. Scrambler is a name Voge chose for a motorcycle. Racing is the use Sprint Filter prints against this medium. Both are vocabulary, and vocabulary is where most intake purchases go wrong. The measured part of the page is shorter and duller: an opening of 85 microns, a rated flow of 15,000 litres per square metre per second, and a retention figure obtained against 100-micron particles. Buy from that half.

Which figures were measured, and against what

The aperture and the flow rate come from the medium itself and describe it in isolation, on a bench, per unit of area. The retention figures come from a comparison at a single particle size, 100 microns: 95.22 per cent for this cloth, 93.13 for the standard P08, 76.42 for a four-layer oiled cotton element. That is a real number and a narrow one. It says this weave is good at coarse debris, and it says nothing at all about the finer fraction, which is the fraction that wears engines. No published percentage covers that ground for any of these media.

What is left for a Trofeo ACX Scrambler

A choice of direction rather than a rank. Loose ground and dust argue for a tighter medium: the CM251P14 catalogued for this airbox works at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec, roughly a third of the standard flow with a great deal more held back. Tarmac and ordinary weather argue for the standard CM251S at 80 µm and 5,050. The racing weave in this listing argues for engines run near their limit and opened often. Whichever goes in, a drop-in element does not make a standard Trofeo ACX Scrambler noticeably stronger — that sentence is true of the whole category, and of every medium in it.

Care and cleaning

Air first, water second, heat never. Compressed air held to the clean side of the CM251S F1-85 pushes the load back out the way it arrived; lukewarm water with a mild detergent deals with whatever stays behind, rinsed until the water is clear.
