Not many road motorcycles are built to breathe air at more than the pressure around them. The ZZR 1400 is one of them: the ram-air ducts in the nose are there to push air into the airbox as speed rises, and the front of the machine was drawn around that job. It makes the airbox an odd place to leave unexamined. A Sprint Filter P08 adds nothing to that pressure, and it will not make a standard ZZR 1400 noticeably stronger — nothing dropped into a standard airbox does. What it settles is whether the restriction in front of the throttle bodies stays where the factory put it, or climbs across an interval nobody can see into.
Key Features
- One layer of woven polyester, run dry — no filter oil to apply, re-dose or wash out
- 80 µm filtration at 5,050 l/m²/sec — the road and track medium
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns upwards; the opening comes from the weave, not pressed pulp
- Roughly twice the working surface of the usual performance element
- Takes the paper panel's place in the standard airbox — nothing cut, no remap
- Cleaned and refitted for the life of the motorcycle; two years of warranty
The one thing standing in a fed airbox
Ram air is the rare part of an intake that costs nothing to run and a great deal to design: frontal area, duct routing, a box sealed well enough to hold what the ducts gather. All of it crosses the element before it reaches the throttle bodies, and the element is the only piece of that path that changes with time. That is the argument for knowing where it stands, and it is not a power one: clean it and the engine does not wake up, leave it a season too long and nothing announces itself either. The difference shows at the far end of an interval.
Twice the cloth, and what that buys
Surface area is the quiet half of a filter specification. The P08 starts with around double the working cloth of the usual performance element, so a given dust load covers a smaller share of it and the restriction rises more slowly. A few minutes with an air line then returns it to where it began — something a paper panel cannot do at any price. Sprint Filter measured 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles for the dry P08 against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton.
Care and cleaning
Most services need nothing but compressed air, held against the clean face of the PM161S so the dirt leaves the way it came in. Where air will not shift it, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse clear. Let it dry fully in moving air — never with a heat gun, a radiator or a flame, since heat ruins polyester — and refit it dry, with nothing applied. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the standard airbox of the Kawasaki ZZR 1400 + ABS built from 2012 to 2026. The fitment list carries two entries, ZZR 1400 + ABS and ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS, and they describe one machine under two names: same displacement, same years, same airbox. Parts are catalogued by the airbox, not the badge, so order by element code and year. Both appear in the Fitment tab.
