Almost every ride on a 701 Enduro has two halves. There is the tarmac leg out to wherever the riding actually starts, and there is the part that justifies owning the bike. Riders describe themselves by the second half and spend most of their hours in the first. That gap matters when choosing a filter medium, because the element cannot be swapped halfway through a day: whatever is in the airbox at breakfast does both legs. PM74S is the standard dry polyester weave, and for most 701 Enduros an honest reading of the ratio puts it in front.

The ratio, not the intention

Count hours rather than ambitions. A bike that covers two hundred road kilometres to reach forty of trail is being asked, most of the time, to be a road bike wearing knobbly tyres. For that mix the standard weave is the right specification. Sprint Filter catalogues a far finer medium for this same housing, and taking it costs a large share of the flow every day of the year, redeemed only on the days when the air is genuinely full of dust. Where those days are a minority the P08 wins; where they are most of the year the finer element does. Neither is a rung above the other — finer holds back more and passes less, and that is the whole exchange.

Cleaning it wherever you happen to be

The second half of the case is logistical. A washable element means nothing has to be carried and nothing has to be sourced at the end of a dusty week. Compressed air at a workshop, or water and a mild detergent at the end of a trip, and the bike is not waiting on a parts order somewhere nobody stocks them. None of this makes a standard 701 noticeably stronger — a drop-in element has no way to — but the intake restriction can be reset whenever the riding demands it rather than when a new panel arrives.

Care and cleaning

Blow air through from the clean face outwards so the load leaves the way it came. Where air is not enough, wash in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until nothing further comes away. Dry in moving air only, never with heat and never near a flame, and refit the element completely dry. Nothing is oiled afterwards, which is the step most likely to be overdone on other filter types.
