The Africa Twin name spans two intake generations, and they do not share a part number. Sprint Filter lists PM159S against the CRF1000L built from 2017 to 2019; the CRF1100L that replaced it has its own reference. What the two do share is the layout: both feed the parallel twin through a pair of airboxes, and both therefore take two elements per machine rather than one. That combination catches people out: the count is familiar from the newer bike, the reference is not, and a listing chosen by model name alone can be right about the quantity and wrong about the part.
Key Features
- Two elements per machine, one in each airbox — the order is always a pair
- Dry woven polyester, single layer, never oiled at any point in its life
- 80 µm filtration at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, the road and track specification
- Threads from ø 22 microns; that is the fibre diameter, not the aperture of the weave
- Each element carries roughly twice the cloth of a conventional performance filter
- Standard housings, unmodified, no remap — cleaned and refitted for the life of the bike
Why the reference matters more than the badge
Part numbers here follow housings. A manufacturer can leave a model name in place across a redesign, and the catalogue cannot pretend the box did not change, so the year window on the listing decides. Here that line falls at the end of the 2019 model year. Read the build year in the registration document rather than the sticker on the beak, and check it against the compatibility list before ordering — a 2019 and a 2020 Africa Twin are two different orders even though they are the same idea of a motorcycle.
What a pair of elements is actually worth
Nothing fitted inside the standard airboxes makes a standard Africa Twin stronger. What changes is the shape of the restriction over the years: a cellulose panel is at its best the day it goes in and worse thereafter until it is discarded, twice over on this engine, while a washed weave returns to its own baseline. Sprint Filter measures its cloth at 93.13 % retention of 100-micron particles against 76.42 % for four-layer oiled cotton, and does it dry, so no film can be drawn along the tract onto a sensor.
Care and cleaning
Both elements are serviced the same way and at the same time. Compressed air goes on the clean face and pushes outward, so the load leaves by the surface that caught it. Heavier soiling comes out with warm water and a mild dish soap, rinsed until clear. No heat at any stage — no hairdryer, no exhaust, no flame — and neither element goes back damp. Refit PM159S dry and untreated. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
PM159S is recorded against one machine, the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin from 2017 to 2019, and that machine needs two elements. Both airboxes take the same part, so there is no left and right to keep straight — but there is a quantity to get right. Check the year against the compatibility list on this page before ordering.
