DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61091-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 61091-31
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 160 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 95 N/mm.

Choosing 95 N/mm

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Fitting

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
