DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06452-10 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 115 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06452-10
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 220 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 61 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 85 N/mm.

Choosing 85 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
