DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 21040-24
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • 81 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 160 mm, inner diameter 51 mm, rate 80 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Installation

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
