DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-12 is a shock absorber spring rated at 56 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 06310-12
  • Free length 250 mm
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 56 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 250 mm and the inner diameter at 61 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
