DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06411-11 is a shock absorber spring rated at 54 N/mm, 255 mm long with a 63.5 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 06411-11
  • Measured spring rate 54 N/mm
  • Free length 255 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 63.5 mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • 140 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

At 255 mm free length and 63.5 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
