DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06380-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 27-36 N/mm, 280 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06380-06
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 280 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Progressively wound
  • Measured spring rate 27-36 N/mm (progressive)

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

The Numbers That Matter

At 280 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
