DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-46 is a shock absorber spring rated at 27-35 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 132 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 27-35 N/mm (progressive)
  • Öhlins part number 00180-46
  • Free length 270 mm
  • Progressively wound

How Öhlins Makes Them

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

The Numbers That Matter

At 270 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Rate and the Linkage

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
