DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60360-16 is a shock absorber spring rated at 21-26 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 200 mm
  • Measured spring rate 21-26 N/mm (progressive)
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated black
  • Öhlins part number 60360-16
  • 120 mm of usable stroke
  • Progressively wound

Why the Rate Holds

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

The Numbers That Matter

The 46 mm bore and 200 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 21-26 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Rate and the Linkage

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
