DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60480-04 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20-28 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Free length 230 mm
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Progressively wound
  • Measured spring rate 20-28 N/mm (progressive)
  • Öhlins part number 60480-04

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Dimensions

Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 20-28 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
