DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21102-64 is a shock absorber spring rated at 160 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 170 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 72 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated black
  • Öhlins part number 21102-64
  • Measured spring rate 160 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 160 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
