DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01103-59 is a shock absorber spring rated at 150 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 240 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 101 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01103-59
  • Measured spring rate 150 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 240 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 150 N/mm.

Choosing 150 N/mm

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
