DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21102-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated black
  • Öhlins part number 21102-54
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • 71 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 170 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 140 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 140 N/mm

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
