DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66514-140 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 140 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 66514-140
  • Free length 140 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 140 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 140 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Installation

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
