DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-90 is a shock absorber spring rated at 12-14.3 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Progressively wound
  • Powder-coated black
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 12-14.3 N/mm
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-90

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

At 230 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Rate and the Linkage

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
