DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21102-41 is a shock absorber spring rated at 115 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 21102-41
  • Powder-coated black
  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 115 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Dimensions

Free length 170 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 115 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 115 N/mm

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
