DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21102-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 170 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21102-36
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
  • 82 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated black
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 170 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 105 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
