DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01099-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 220 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01099-34
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 100 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
