DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21141-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 175 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Free length 175 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 83 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21141-34
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 175 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 100 N/mm

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
