DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01693-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 0.5 N/mm, 7.5 mm long with a 14 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 7.5 mm
  • Inner diameter 14 mm
  • Measured spring rate 0.5 N/mm
  • 4.5 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01693-02
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 7.5 mm, inner diameter 14 mm, rate 0.5 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
