Function
Dimensionally this is 8 mm, 18 mm, 0.15 mm, which is how it is told apart from the rest of the range. Shims are reused only if they are undamaged and flat; a coned shim is finished. Two shims of the same thickness but different diameter give completely different curves. A shim is a thin, ground steel washer, and the stack of them is what generates damping.

A shim is a thin steel washer, and a stack of them is what actually generates damping in an Öhlins unit — the oil has to bend them out of the way to pass.
