DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08432-85 is a pair of fork springs rated at 8.5 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 38.5 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Supplied as a pair
  • 134 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 38.5 mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Öhlins part number 08432-85
  • Measured spring rate 8.5 N/mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

Dimensions

The 38.5 mm bore and 220 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 8.5 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Choosing 8.5 N/mm

If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Installation

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
