DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08445-80 is a pair of fork springs rated at 8.0 N/mm, 390 mm long with a 43 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 43 mm
  • Measured spring rate 8.0 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 08445-80
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 390 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

The 43 mm bore and 390 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 8.0 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
