Modes, Changed Often
Sport is abrupt enough on this motorcycle that the softer maps get chosen far more than owners admit. Every one of those selections is made from the left block.
Printed and Then Gone
The legends on a moulded assembly are surface applied. After a few summers of sun and glove leather they are decorative, which on a bike with three riding modes is genuinely inconvenient.
Warmth in the Cockpit
An L-twin with the rear cylinder close by puts heat into the bar area, then it cools completely overnight. Plastics creep under that cycling and machined aluminium does not.
Clips and Vibration
Two moulded halves with snap fittings, on a bike ridden hard. They lose tension across years and the block starts moving slightly against the bar in a way that cannot be corrected.
Depth Rather Than Coating
Anodising is part of the metal. On a supermoto that will be laid down, a scratch takes coloured surface with it rather than exposing bright aluminium underneath.
Twenty Minutes Either Way
Nothing is cut, so the factory block goes back on whenever it is wanted. That is worth having on a motorcycle likely to be modified several times over its life.
The End of Air Cooling
Ducati retired the 1100 twin in 2013 and enthusiasts mourned the noise. The liquid-cooled 821 was faster in every gear and the argument settled slowly rather than at once.
Eight Hundred and Seventy Millimetres
To the seat. Ducati never apologised for the height and offered a lower saddle as an accessory rather than compromising the geometry for shorter riders.
A Tail With Nothing In It
Minimal subframe, exhaust routed low, almost no bodywork behind the rider. It is why the Hypermotard looks the way it does and part of why it weighs what it does.
