DescriptionThe whole story

Nine point two kilograms down to four. That is 56.5 per cent, and it is the largest proportional saving on any touring machine in this catalogue — more than five kilograms taken off a bike whose standard exhaust weighs as much as a small wheel.

Key Features

  • 4.0 kg against the standard 9.2 kg: 5.2 kg and 56.5 per cent less
  • 5.2 PS more at 9,050 rpm and 5.4 Nm more at 7,000 rpm — both figures large for a slip-on
  • Titanium construction, a pair of silencers rather than a single unit
  • EC and ECE type approved, certificates supplied
  • Around 30 minutes to fit, no remapping required
  • Covers ten model years of a motorcycle that changed very little

One Motorcycle, Two Names

Kawasaki sells this machine as the 1400 GTR in Europe and as the Concours 14 in North America. It is the same 1,352 cc four, the same shaft drive, the same chassis and the same exhaust mounting — only the badge and the market differ. Both names appear in the fitment here, because a used import will have whichever one its papers were issued under.

Why the Saving Is So Large

The 1400 GTR was designed in the mid-2000s around a ZX-14 engine detuned for touring, and its exhaust reflects that era: two large double-skinned steel silencers, sized for noise limits and durability rather than mass. Nine kilograms of it hang behind the rear axle on a bike that already carries panniers, a shaft drive and a full fairing.

Removing 5.2 kg from that position is felt in two places — how the bike settles into a corner with luggage aboard, and how it feels being manoeuvred by hand. The performance gain, 5.2 PS and 5.4 Nm, is unusually large for a slip-on and comes from the same source: an exhaust path that no longer has to be that restrictive.

A Used Motorcycle Now

The GTR ran from 2008 to 2017 and is a used machine today. That changes the arithmetic in its favour rather than against it: a bike of this age often has silencers corroding at the seams, and replacing them with titanium units that will outlast the rest of the motorcycle costs less than most owners expect.

A Pair, Not a Single Silencer

The 1400 GTR carries one silencer on each side, and this part number is both of them. That has two practical consequences. The 5.2 kg saving is the sum of the pair, not a per-side figure, and there is no half-order: a single Akrapovic beside a standard steel unit would sit at a different height, weigh differently and sound wrong.

It also explains the price relative to a single-silencer bike. You are buying two hand-finished titanium assemblies, and the 30-minute installation covers taking off two units and hanging two more so that they line up with each other as well as with the motorcycle.

Fitment and Compatibility

S-K14SO5-HZAAT covers the Kawasaki 1400 GTR and the Concours 14 from model year 2008 through 2017. It is supplied as a pair.

Road Approval

EC type approval and ECE type approval, with the certificates supplied and downloadable here. The silencers are legal replacement parts for road use in the European Union.
