DescriptionThe whole story▼
Read this before anything else. Akrapovic prints a warning against this silencer: the EC type approval is valid only for model years up to 2006. The part fits FZ1 Fazers built through to 2015, but on any machine from 2007 onwards it is a track part with no approval behind it.
Key Features
- EC type approval covers model year 2006 only
- Fits the FZ1 Fazer through to 2015, without approval from 2007 on
- Carbon fibre muffler outer sleeve
- Slip-on: the standard headers and mid-section stay in place
- Akrapovic publishes no weight, power or noise figures for this part
Why the Approval Stops at 2006
An EC type approval is granted against a specific vehicle configuration. Yamaha revised the FZ1's emissions equipment after the first model year, and the approval that was issued for the 2006 machine did not carry over.
Akrapovic never withdrew the fitment — the silencer still bolts on — but it did not renew the approval either. That leaves an unusual situation, and it is stated here rather than left for a roadside check to discover.
What That Means in Practice
A 2006 FZ1 Fazer with this silencer is road legal in Germany with no entry in the vehicle documents. A 2008 one with the same part fitted is not, regardless of how identical the two motorcycles look.
Anyone buying for a later bike is buying a track silencer. That is a legitimate purchase and this catalogue sells plenty of them; it just should not come as a surprise.
No Published Figures
Akrapovic gives no weight, no power reading and no noise measurement for this part number. That is unusual for a silencer of this age and there is no way to fill the gap honestly, so nothing is estimated here.
What the manufacturer does describe is the construction: a carbon fibre muffler outer sleeve, replacing the standard steel can.
What Yamaha Fitted
The standard FZ1 Fazer silencer is a large steel unit slung on the right, fed by a four-into-one collector and a catalytic converter that both stay on the motorcycle when this part goes on. Replacing it is the cheapest change that alters how the bike sounds.
The Bike It Was Built For
The FZ1 Fazer took the R1 engine of its day, detuned it for the road and wrapped it in a half fairing. It is a fast, comfortable, unfashionable motorcycle that people keep for a long time, and that is exactly the ownership pattern that leads to an exhaust upgrade a decade in.
The Headers Stay
This is a slip-on. Yamaha's headers, collector and catalytic converter all stay on the motorcycle, and only the silencer changes. That keeps the price down, keeps the fitting simple and limits how far the sound can change.
Ten Model Years
Yamaha built the FZ1 Fazer from 2006 to 2015 with the same exhaust mounting throughout, which is why one part covers the run. The approval, as above, does not.
Road Approval
EC type approval, valid for model year 2006 only. From 2007 onwards there is no valid approval and the silencer is for closed circuits.
