DescriptionThe whole story▼

Seven and a quarter kilograms out of one component. Yamaha's pre-muffler on the MT-10 weighs 8.22 kg; this titanium pipe weighs 0.96. At 88.3 per cent it is the largest weight reduction of any part in this catalogue, by a wide margin.

Key Features

  • 0.96 kg against the standard 8.22 kg: 7.26 kg and 88.3 per cent less
  • The largest single weight saving in this catalogue
  • Fully titanium construction
  • Removes the stock pre-muffler entirely
  • 3.2 PS more at 10,700 rpm and 4.8 Nm at 5,700 rpm
  • Designed to accompany the Slip-On Line (Titanium)
  • No road approval — circuit use only

What a Pre-Muffler Is and Why It Is So Heavy

Between the headers and the visible silencer, most modern motorcycles carry a large steel box under the engine. It holds the catalytic converter and does most of the noise reduction, and because it lives in the hottest, dirtiest part of the bike it is built out of thick steel.

Nobody sees it, so nobody thinks about it — which is why 8.22 kg can sit there unnoticed on a motorcycle whose owner is weighing carbon parts on a kitchen scale.

Where the Weight Comes Off

Low and central, directly under the engine. That is the least harmful place for mass on a motorcycle, which means the 7.26 kg will change the MT-10's total weight far more than it changes its handling.

Seven kilograms on a 212 kg bike is over three per cent, and it is the kind of reduction that usually costs several thousand euros in carbon wheels.

It Needs the Slip-On

This pipe is an accompaniment, not a complete exhaust. It replaces the section between the headers and the silencer, and Akrapovic designed it for use with the Slip-On Line (Titanium) for this machine. Without a matching silencer there is nothing at the end of it.

Ninety Minutes

Longer than most link pipes, because the 2022 MT-10's pre-muffler sits behind the shock and under the swingarm pivot. The exhaust hangers have to come off and the rear of the bike needs supporting.

This is workshop work with the machine on a lift, not an evening job.

What It Does Not Do

It does not make the MT-10 louder on its own. The link pipe sits ahead of the silencer, and the silencer is what a bystander hears. Fitted with the Slip-On Line the sound opens up; fitted alone it would have nothing to open into.

Fitment and Compatibility

L-Y10SO19/2 covers the Yamaha MT-10 and MT-10 SP from 2022 through 2024. The earlier MT-10 takes L-Y10SO15T instead. Installation is quoted at 90 minutes.

Road Approval

None. Removing the catalytic converter ends the type approval. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
