DescriptionThe whole story▼
Akrapovic's description of this part is one sentence long: if the passenger footrests are removed, this optional carbon fibre muffler bracket is needed. That is the entire purpose, and there is nothing else to know before ordering except which generation of ZX-10R you own.
Key Features
- Carries the silencer once the pillion footrests come off
- Carbon fibre construction
- For the 2011 to 2015 ZX-10R, not the current bike
- Akrapovic publishes no weight figure for it
- An optional part — not needed if the pegs stay on
Which ZX-10R
Kawasaki built this generation from 2011 until the 2016 redesign, and it has its own subframe. Akrapovic makes a separate carbon bracket for the 2021 machines, and the two are not interchangeable — the part numbers look similar and the mounting points are not.
Check the model year before ordering. On a used superbike that has been through several owners, that is not always as obvious as it sounds.
Why the Pegs Come Off
Club racing regulations require it, most track day organisers ask for it, and a bike that never carries a passenger has no reason to keep several hundred grams of bracketry high on the subframe.
What catches people out is that Kawasaki hangs the silencer off the same casting. Remove the footrest assembly and the exhaust has no rear mounting, which is the problem this bracket solves.
No Published Weight
Akrapovic gives no figure for this part and none is estimated here. The comparable bracket for the later ZX-10R is quoted at 100 grams against a standard 300, which gives a sense of the order of magnitude without being a number that belongs to this part.
The reason to fit carbon here is not really the weight. It is that the bracket sits in plain view under the tail and next to the silencer, and a moulded carbon part looks like it belongs there in a way a fabricated aluminium plate does not.
Carbon, Cut Once
A bracket like this is laid up in a mould rather than cut from sheet, which is why it can follow the curve of the subframe instead of being folded to approximate it. That is also why it is not adjustable: the shape is the part, and a bracket for one subframe will not persuade another.
Optional, and Only Sometimes
Worth stating plainly: this is not needed for a standard installation. A ZX-10R with its pillion footrests still fitted carries the silencer perfectly well on the factory mount, and an Akrapovic slip-on bolts straight to it.
The bracket exists for one specific situation, and buying it without being in that situation buys a part that will sit in a drawer.
Road Approval
Not applicable. A mounting bracket is neither an emissions nor a noise component, and no approval attaches to it. What decides whether the motorcycle is road legal is the exhaust it holds up.
