DescriptionThe whole story▼

Five hundred grams, in five minutes, from a part that costs less than a tank of fuel on a long trip. Ducati's standard heat shield on the Monster weighs 600 grams; this one weighs 100. It is the rare accessory where the numbers do the arguing.

Key Features

  • 100 grams where Ducati's own shield weighs 600
  • Five sixths of the weight gone — 83 per cent
  • Five minutes to fit, the quickest job in this catalogue
  • Carbon fibre, replacing the standard shield directly
  • Four Monster model names across seven model years

Six Hundred Grams for a Heat Shield

That is a remarkable figure for what is essentially a panel. Ducati's original is a substantial steel pressing with its own mounting frame, sized to keep the twin outlets away from a passenger's leg, and it weighs more than some silencers in this catalogue save in total.

Half a kilogram is not going to change how a 209 kg Monster rides. It is, however, half a kilogram removed for the price of a good dinner and five minutes of work, which is an unusually efficient exchange.

Five Minutes

Akrapovic quotes five minutes, and that is the shortest installation time anywhere in this catalogue. Two fasteners, the old shield off, the new one on, done before the kettle boils.

There is nothing to adjust, nothing to torque to a critical figure, and no reason to book a workshop.

Four Names, Two Engines

The shield covers the Monster 1200 and 1200 S, the 1200 R, and the smaller 821. Ducati used the same tail section and exhaust position across the 1,198 cc and 821 cc L-twins, so one part serves the whole family from 2014 to 2020.

Where It Sits

High on the right, under the seat unit and directly on the silencer. On a Monster — a motorcycle with no fairing to hide anything behind — that is one of the most visible surfaces on the machine.

A woven carbon panel there reads as part of the exhaust. The standard steel one reads as a bracket somebody had to add.

What It Does Not Change

Power, torque, sound and approval all stay exactly as they were. This is a weight and appearance part, and the weight is genuinely worth having by the standards of its class rather than by the standards of the motorcycle.

Pairs With the Slip-On

The shield is designed around the Akrapovic exhaust for these machines. Fitted alongside the titanium slip-on and its link pipe it completes the installation; on Ducati's own silencer the geometry is not the same.

An Ageing Twin

The 2014 to 2020 Monster is a used motorcycle now, and a well-kept one is a bike whose owner has chosen to keep it rather than replace it. That is exactly the ownership pattern in which a five-minute, half-kilogram improvement makes sense.

Road Approval

Not applicable. A heat shield carries no emissions or noise approval, and what the Monster may do on the road is decided by the silencer and the link pipe ahead of it.
