DescriptionThe whole story▼

Peak power at 8,300 rpm. The Kawasaki KX450 makes its at 9,850 and the Yamaha YZ450F at 10,600 — the Suzuki reaches its maximum more than two thousand revolutions earlier, and that single number describes the whole character of the bike.

Key Features

  • Titanium complete system for the 2018 to 2026 RM-Z450
  • 50.8 PS at 8,300 rpm, up from 50.2
  • Torque 45.3 Nm, up from 44.6 — the largest torque gain of the 450s here
  • 3.42 kg instead of 4.3 kg, 880 grams less
  • Nine model years on one part number

A low-revving 450

The RM-Z450 has always been the torque-led bike in the class: it pulls from low down and rewards a rider who short-shifts rather than one who revs it out. This system leans the same way — the torque gain of 0.7 Nm is larger than on either the Kawasaki or the Yamaha, and it arrives where the engine already lives.

For a rider who rides the RM-Z the way it wants to be ridden, that matters more than the peak figure ever will.

Nine model years

2018 through 2026. Like the RM-Z250, the 450 has stayed largely unchanged, and one article covers the whole run. That also means a used bike of almost any age from this generation takes the same system.

Not for the road

Closed course competition only. No EC or ECE approval and no homologation.

A torque engine, and an exhaust that agrees with it

The RM-Z450 has never chased peak revs. Suzuki built it to pull from low down, and riders who get on with it are the ones who use third gear where others use second. Peak at 8,300 rpm is more than 2,000 below the Yamaha and 1,500 below the Kawasaki in this catalogue.

Akrapovic's gains follow that character: 0.7 Nm of torque against 0.6 PS. It is the only 450 system here where the torque gain is proportionally larger than the power gain, and on this engine that is the useful way round.

Nine model years on one number

2018 to 2026. Suzuki has left the RM-Z450 alone for longer than any of its rivals have left theirs, and one article covers the entire run. For a workshop or a club that is a single part number for almost every RM-Z450 that will come through the door.

It also means a used bike from anywhere in that span takes the same system, and that a system bought now moves to the next machine.

What 880 grams does

Twenty per cent of the exhaust mass, taken from above the rear axle. On a 450 that is ridden hard the effect is on rotation in the air and on how the rear settles on landing rather than on lap time in a straight line.

Fitting and approval

Complete system, header and silencer together. Closed course competition only — no EC or ECE approval and no homologation document. Akrapovic marks every system in its motocross range the same way.

Where the RM-Z450 sits in the class

Suzuki has not restyled the 450 in the way Kawasaki and Yamaha have, and the bike is often bought used and ridden long. That makes an exhaust that fits nine model years unusually good value — the same part serves a 2018 club bike and a 2026 machine.
