DescriptionThe whole story▼

Autumn is hard on a small sports bike. The RS4 50 goes out in the dark, the tarmac under the trees is covered in wet leaves, and the rider usually has a fixed appointment and no option to wait for better weather. Accossato's AGPA142 front pads are listed for the Aprilia RS4 50 of 2012 to 2019, and this version carries the Sintered (ST) compound, the one the company describes as holding its grip on a wet disc and at both ends of the temperature scale.

Key Features

  • Sintered (ST) front brake pads for the Aprilia RS4 50, model years 2012 to 2019
  • Accossato part AGPA142, two pads to a box, the ration for one caliper
  • A compound aimed at wet roads, dark mornings and riding through all seasons
  • Accossato: a constant grip level whether the pads run hot or cold, plus good bite in the wet
  • An organic version of the same pad exists for drier, calmer duty
  • Accossato also catalogues the AGPA32 front pad for the RS4 50 from 2011 to 2021
  • AGPA258 takes care of the rear brake across the same model years
  • No German ABE or test mark documented; supplied for racing and competition

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato sums up the ST mix in two promises: a high, constant level of grip with the pads hot or cold, and reliable bite once the disc is wet. For a rider whose RS4 50 is transport rather than a toy, the second promise is the one that counts in November, and the first explains why the lever feels much the same at the end of a damp commute as it did at the start of it. The wider aim behind the pad range is a long life with little fade, reached by keeping the heat that builds in the friction material inside sensible limits. A fifty does not produce the heat a large machine does, so sintered material on this bike lives well within its range.

Wet Leaves and Painted Lines

Rain changes a road unevenly. A dry-looking strip in the middle of the lane can end at a pool where the camber falls away, drain covers turn slick before the tarmac around them does, and the paint of a crossing stays greasy long after a shower has passed. On a light machine the front wheel reports quickly when grip has gone, but there is also little mass to argue with, so the sensible method on an RS4 50 is to shed speed early, finish the work upright and cross paint or metal with the lever released.

Water sitting on the disc is the other half of the story. After a stretch of open road with no braking at all, the first pull has to sweep the surface clear before full bite arrives, so a brief, light application now and then keeps things ready. Once home, rinse the front wheel with clean water rather than a pressure lance, let the bike dry before it goes under a cover, and glance at the pads from time to time: a wet season takes more out of them than a dry one, helped along by the grit that comes off the road with the spray.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato's list places the AGPA142 on the Aprilia RS4 50 from 2012 to 2019. The catalogue names a second front pad for the model as well, the AGPA32, whose coverage begins in 2011 and ends in 2021, so a quick comparison of old and new outlines before fitting is time well spent. A box contains what one caliper needs; look at the front of your own RS4 50 to see how many are fitted there. For the rear axle, Accossato quotes the AGPA258 across the same years, and both pads in a caliper are replaced together.

Road Approval

Neither a German ABE nor any test documentation exists on our side for this pad, so it is offered for competition and track use only.
