DescriptionThe whole story▼
The MT-09 SP added higher-specification suspension and a distinctive paint scheme to the standard triple, aimed at owners who wanted a sharper edge without stepping up to a full supersport. Sharper handling tempts a different kind of mistake than the standard bike usually sees: a corner taken with slightly more commitment than the tyres and the road surface can support, often on a damp morning when the SP's improved front end gives a false sense of security. For the MT-09 SP of 2018, Accossato lists the PF040, two black front axle sliders.
Key Features
- Front axle sliders for the Yamaha MT-09 SP, model year 2018
- Accossato PF040, one protector for each side
- Aluminium and plastic, black finish
- Spacers, screws and remaining mounting parts in the kit, according to Accossato
- PP080 rear sliders and TP097 crash pads also listed for this bike
- Meant to take the first contact if the front washes out
- Same pair listed for the standard MT-09, Tracer 900, Tracer 900 GT and XSR900
- No German ABE on file; for racing and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Both PF040 protectors are made from a mix of aluminium and plastic and finished in black, sized for the left and right side of the front wheel. Accossato's kit holds the spacers, screws and the remaining parts it regards as necessary for mounting. Since the SP's chassis invites a quicker pace than the standard bike, the sliders are positioned to be first to the ground should the front let go, which can limit what the fork and axle area take as a result. Once a slider shows a hard scrape or crack, treat it as spent and fit a fresh one.
A False Sense of Grip on a Damp Morning
Improved suspension changes how a motorcycle communicates with its rider, and on the MT-09 SP that extra composure can mask the point where grip is actually running out, particularly on a damp morning when the road has not fully dried from overnight rain. A corner that felt entirely secure a moment earlier can let go with little warning once the front tyre crosses a patch of standing moisture or a diesel sheen near a junction. Riders moving up to the SP from the standard bike sometimes carry over habits built on less capable suspension, pushing a touch harder than the conditions allow before they have recalibrated their sense of the limit. If the front does let go, the sliders take the first contact with the road; check them, the fork and the levers before continuing the ride.
Fitment and Compatibility
Only the 2018 model year appears against the PF040 on Accossato's own list for the MT-09 SP, so that is the year we use. For the rear, the PP080 sliders apply, and the TP097 crash pads cover the fairing. The same PF040 code is shared in our shop with the standard MT-09, the Tracer 900, the Tracer 900 GT and the XSR900. If you are unsure your SP matches, send us its details before ordering.
Road Approval
We hold no ABE or other test document for the PF040, so it is supplied for racing and competition use.
