DescriptionThe whole story▼

A café racer asks its rider to lean forward over a long tank with the hands low on clip-on bars, and the Thruxton 1200 R is no exception. That posture makes hard braking a matter of technique as much as hardware. For the Thruxton 1200 R of 2017 to 2021, Accossato lists the DK203, a floating front disc with a black carrier and a 310 mm friction ring; the supplier states that it swaps directly for the original disc.

Key Features

  • Floating front disc for the Triumph Thruxton 1200 R
  • Listed for 2017 to 2021
  • 310 mm outer, 82 mm inner diameter, 4 mm thick
  • Interchangeable with the original equipment disc
  • Black carrier
  • Minimum thickness printed on the disc
  • Priced per disc; the Thruxton R uses two at the front
  • No German ABE documented; for circuit use

Construction and Material Quality

Look closely at the DK203 and you see a friction ring and a black carrier, held together by rivets. Those rivets give the ring a small amount of float, so it can expand and contract with temperature without forcing the carrier out of true. Accossato says its racing background in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 informed both the choice of materials and the fit between the parts, and the supplier describes the disc as interchangeable with the original Triumph part.

Clip-Ons and a Café Crouch

In the tucked position of a Thruxton, much of your weight already rests on your wrists. Brake hard and the deceleration adds more, until your arms are holding up your upper body and the steering turns heavy and imprecise. Experienced café racer riders take the load off their hands before they brake. Squeeze the tank with your knees, press the balls of your feet into the footrests and let your core hold your torso, so the arms stay bent and relaxed on the clip-ons. Then the fingers can modulate the lever finely, and the front tyre receives smooth steering inputs instead of jerky ones.

It feels awkward at first; practise at moderate speed on an empty road until the knee grip becomes automatic. The brakes need attention too. A disc that runs out of true sends its pulse through the lever straight into stiff arms, which makes the problem feel worse than it is. Measure the discs of your Thruxton R at every service and compare the reading with the minimum printed on them.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK203 for the Thruxton 1200 R from 2017 to 2021, replacing an original front disc. For the Thruxton 1200 R of 2015 to 2016, the list gives a different, larger disc, the DK132, so check the model year of your bike and measure the disc before ordering. Two discs brake the front wheel and each order covers one. Accossato's lever list for the Thruxton R includes the EDF099 and the EST333P.

Road Approval

The DK203 is not covered by a documented German ABE or type approval and is sold for track use.
